Douglas "Doug" Hickey, 72, of Moncton, passed away suddenly on August 10, 2026. Born in St. John’s, NL, he was the son of the late Melvin and Sarah (Howe) Hickey.

Doug had a varied working life, including employment with Canada Post and CN, as well as working as a land surveyor. He possessed an exceptionally intelligent and curious mind, along with an acute memory for detail. He was a lifelong learner who could become deeply immersed in almost any subject that captured his interest.

Doug had a particular passion for history, especially military history, aviation and aerospace. A proud member of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, he devoted countless hours to creating highly detailed model airplanes and built a treasured collection that he displayed throughout his beloved home.

Doug was also a blues guitar player who loved turning up the volume and jamming to blues and rock and roll. He had a deep love for animals as well. His German Shepherds, Fritz and Sparky, and his cats, Dwarf and Turkey, whom he said were great company, were important companions in his life.

Doug was deeply loyal to his family and forever devoted to his mother, Sarah. He valued the people in his life and maintained friendships across many chapters of his life, often reaching out simply to talk, share a story, or have a good laugh.

Those who knew Doug will remember a caring and genuine man who was generous with his time. He had a strong sense of self and a wonderful sense of humour. He had a way of making people feel that their conversations mattered. Some affectionately called him "Mr. Hickey," a name that reflected the respect they held for him.

Doug is predeceased by his sister Janet and his brother Bobby, who died at a young age. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Cox of Windsor Junction, NS; his half-brother, Kenneth Hickey of Burlington, ON; his nephews: Henry and Ryan; and nieces: Peggy, Tara, Jessica, Cadence, Lacey and Madeline.

Doug had always hoped to remain in his own home, and he was able to leave this world peacefully there, asleep in his chair. Thank you to all the doctors and nurses who cared for Doug throughout his illness. While his passing leaves great sadness for those who loved him, there is comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering.
