Accompanied by her family, Rita Lanteigne Cormier passed away
at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre on May 1,
2026, at the age of one hundred. She had just celebrated her 100th
birthday on April 20, 2026. She was proud to say that Queen Elizabeth
II had her birthday on April 21 and was born in the same year, in
1926.
She was the daughter of the late Prospère
Lanteigne and the late Ella Chenard, of Caraquet. Before her admission
to the hospital, she lived at the Oasis Residence in
Dieppe.
She leaves to mourn, her son Paul Cormier; her grandchildren:
Isabelle and Christopher; the mother of her grandchildren, Heidi
Bohler; many nephews, nieces, cousins; a goddaughter, Diane Godin; and
her longtime good friend, Yolande Bourque.
She has gone to join her husband, Alvin Cormier; her brothers
and sisters: Gilles, Claude, Livain, Irène, and her sister
Alvine, who died at a young age.
After attending the Fredericton Normal School, she taught in
various schools and spent the majority of her career at Essex School
in Moncton, where she retired.
She loved to travel very much. In 1993, with her son Paul,
she visited the Groesbeek Military Cemetery in Holland, a precious
memory, since it is there that the grave of her brother Gilles is
located, who died on March 9, 1945, at the age of 20, just before the
end of the Second World War.
A celebration of life will take place at Frenette Funeral and
Cremation Centre, located at 88 Church Street in Moncton
(506-858-1900), on Saturday May 9 at 11 a.m. In accordance
with her wishes, there will be no visitation. Interment will be at Our
Lady of Calvary cemetery in Dieppe. In memory of Rita, a contribution
to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation would be
appreciated.
