Charles LeBlanc, 89, of Moncton, passed away on Thursday
October 9, 2025 at the Moncton Residence. Born in Cap-Pelé,
he was the son of the late Yvon and Lorraine (Hébert)
LeBlanc.
Charles devoted his life to study, writing, and teaching.
Passionate about China, he learned Mandarin in Taiwan during the 1960s
while pursuing studies in theology and philosophy.
Upon returning to North America, he studied at the University
of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy. He then
settled in Montréal and contributed to the founding of the
Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the University of
Montréal, where he taught for many years.
From 1983 to 1985, he was the first Secretary for Science and
Culture at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. In addition to his role as
a professor, he produced numerous publications on Chinese
philosophers, including two in the Pléiade
collection.
After his retirement, he moved to Cap-Pelé and
taught courses on the history of China at the Université de
Moncton.
He is survived by one sister, Jeannine Gagné (feu
André); one brother, Alfred LeBlanc (Françoise
Gagnon); one sister-in-law, Rose-Marie Robichaud; as well as his
nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother,
Guy.
The family will receive condolences at Frenette Funeral and
Cremation Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (506-858-1900) from where
the funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday October 30 at 4 pm.
Visiting hours are Thursday from 2 pm until time of funeral.
Charles will be resting at Frenette Columbarium in Moncton. In memory
of Charles, a contribution to the Fonds de bourses de
l’Université de Moncton would be
