With deep sorrow, the family of Norbert Henri
‘Nesbitt’ Poirier announces his passing on May 29,
2025, at the age of 82, surrounded by loved ones after a brief
illness.
He will be profoundly missed by his
wife Rachel, his children Francis (Monique), Gabrielle (Pierre), and
Claire (Dave), and his cherished grandchildren Cassidy,
Céleste, and Nicolas. He
is also survived by his brothers Charles (late Diane), Bernard
(Auréa), Dennis (Jeanne), the mother of his children,
Marilyn, along with many nieces and
nephews.
Norbert was predeceased by
his parents, Henri Poirier and Irène Hébert, and
his sister Stella.
Born in Georgetown
(Moncton), New Brunswick, Norbert was a man of many passions. His
lifelong fascination with aviation led him to earn his private
pilot’s license at a young age, later flying drones for the
Canadian and American militaries in the 1970s. In the early 1980s,
with the help of gallons of epoxy resin, countless screws and sturdy
clamps, Norbert meticulously built a Thunderbird sailboat in his
garage. That proud accomplishment became a cherished vessel, carrying
him, his friends, and his family across the Shediac Bay for many
years.
An avid craftsman, he enjoyed building and flying model
airplanes, wood and metal work, birdwatching at home, cribbage
(especially weekly games with his brothers and at the
Boishébert club), fly fishing, and playing the piano. A
talented tinkerer and troubleshooter extraordinaire, Norbert delighted
in taking apart and repairing appliances, and all manners of gadgets.
Nothing was turned away that could not be fixed. Whether building
wooden birdhouses, perfecting the delicate balance of home wine
making, or mastering the art of eggs Florentine and cranberry sauce,
Norbert brought a ceaseless curiosity and dogged determination to
every pursuit. His love for innovation enriched the lives of family
and friends who were fortunate enough to share in his creations, such
as his clever oyster shuckers. A sharp wit, playful sense of humour,
and a joyful spirit defined him.
Norbert worked for Pitney Bowes, where he honed his
skills in business and technology. As the video game industry began to
surge in popularity during the 1980s, he dove into the business world
by becoming the co-owner of an arcade game company (Northern &
Bluebird Amusements), helping a generation part with their quarters
for a chance to beat the high score. Upon retirement, Norbert devoted
more time to his hobbies and doting on his grandchildren. He embraced
the opportunity to travel abroad with Rachel. Together, they cherished
their escapes to explore the scenic coastlines and hidden villages of
the Maritimes, finding beauty and maybe a glass of wine along the
way.
The family extends sincere gratitude to the intensive
care unit staff at the Dr. Georges L. Dumont University Hospital for
their compassionate care.
