Edward passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, at The Moncton
Hospital.
Edward was the second son of the late Alfred and Helen
(Beaton) Leger. He is survived by his sister, Isabelle,
Moncton, NB, his nephew, David, Langley, BC, and his niece, Patricia,
Surrey, BC. He was predeceased by his brother, Paul.
Music was a constant element in Edward's life; in his
DNA. His father had a fine lyric tenor voice and played the
piano. His maternal grandfather played seven instruments and
was a member of The Moncton Citizens' Band.
Edward had a love for the human voice; opera was a particular
favourite. His friends knew not to call on Saturday
afternoon between 2 and 6 pm as the weekly opera broadcasts were aired
on CBC and NPR.
His knowledge of the performing and creative arts was broad
and he was a member of various groups in these fields including
executive committees such as Moncton Art Society, Maritime Art
Association, Stage Door 56, Moncton District Drama council, NB Drama
League, as well as Moncton Ballroom.
In 1982, Edward held a position as a Program Officer,
Cultural Development Branch, Province of New Brunswick,
Fredericton. The experience gained while there led to
invitations to participate in program juries for the Maritime Art
Association, Maine Arts Commission, Maine Craft Association,
Storefront for Architecture and the Maine Center for
Creativity. Edward always felt blessed and he cherished the
many long-term friendships gained during his time in
Maine.
In retirement Edward volunteered as a member of the
Associates of the Provincial Archives, the Development Committee of
the Capitol Theatre and the committee for the art gallery at City
Hall.
A talented visual artist, he participated in regional
exhibitions. His work is found in the collections of the
Université de Moncton, the New Brunswick Art Bank, the
Beaverbrook Art Gallery, as well as private
collections.
Edward had many interests - art, music, cooking, dining with
friends, fashion and dancing. He was a very kind and
sociable person and a mentor to many. He loved his Saturday
morning walks to C'est La Vie coffee shop to meet up with
friends. He always looked quite dapper walking down Main
Street in his fedora and usually a touch of red - his favourite
colour.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff
of Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care and
compassion.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at the
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, 226 St.
George Street, Moncton, NB, on Saturday, May 24th, at 10 am. There
will be no visitation at the funeral home. Interment will be at Our
Lady of Calvary cemetery in Dieppe.
