Christel Gallant, 88, passed away in
her sleep at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre on
January 4, 2025.
Born in Germany, she was the only
child of the late Alfred and Eva (Söhlmann) Bauer. She is
survived by her three beloved children Yves, Janine and Nicole, her
four grandchildren Pascal-Emmanuel and Alexandre Lachance and their
father Claude Lachance, and Marina and Maxime Gallant and their mother
Nora Martirosyan.
After professional training in
translation and conference interpreting, and a few years of
professional practice in Europe, she followed her husband, the late
Melvin Gallant, to Canada and the newly created Université
de Moncton in 1964. There, she taught German language courses and,
from 1972 until her retirement in 1996, various aspects of translation
in the honours bachelor’s program, of which she was the
founder and first director. At the same time, she continued her links
with European countries through extended study and research stays in
Switzerland and France, and the writing of her doctoral thesis on a
subject of German literature.
She had the animal world at heart,
firmly believed in the importance of individual and collective
culture, and pursued a wide range of interests. But the focal point of
her life remained her family, who will miss her
greatly.
In accordance with her wishes, there
will be no visitation and no funeral service. The burial of her ashes
will take place privately at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery,
Moncton.
