Arnold John Paul Targett, 89, of Shediac, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct. 28th, 2024, at the Moncton City Hospital.

Born in Campbellton, Arnold was the son of the late Emerson and Jeanetta (Johnson) Targett. He was a devoted and cherished husband to his wife, Ernestine (Bourque) Targett, whose timeless love will continue well past their 64 years together. Arnold was also a proud, loving father and father-in-law to a son, Scott (Lisa) Targett of Yoho, NB and two daughters, Tammy (Steve) Bowes of Windsor Junction, NS and Kelly (Steve) Roper of Shediac Cape, NB.

With a life full of laughter and love for his family, nothing brought him more joy than time spent with his six adoring grandchildren: Chad Targett, Jacie Targett, Curtis Targett, Tara Bowes, Brianna Bowes, and Hailey Roper, as well as his two great-grandchildren: Brooklynn Bowes and Benjamin Targett.

As the last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by a brother, Lloyd Targett, and five sisters, Connie Ahier, Eileen Cyr, Robina Targett, Betty Targett, and Phyllis Targett. He also leaves behind brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends who were very dear to him.

Professionally, Arnold started out doing bodywork at Lounsbury’s in Campbellton before eventually opening his own Body Shop in Richardsville.  After several years, he launched a second successful business venture when, in 1967, he opened his first fried chicken restaurant in Shediac. He remained owner and proprietor for over 40 years, culminating in his namesake chicken recipe and local landmark fast food restaurant, "Targett’s Fried Chicken."  His customers and staff were very important to Arnold, and he always had a good joke or story at the ready to share with them. It was these people he greatly missed when he retired.

Arnold was a past Auxiliary member of the RCMP.  He was also an avid horseman, active in the NB harness racing industry for many years. From his barn at Brunswick Downs, he was the recipient of two Horse of the Year awards. He had a love for all animals, especially his dogs. He enjoyed fishing, hobby farming and his camp in the great outdoors. As a family, we are grateful to have had him with us for so many years, leading us by his example with integrity, wisdom and love. We will carry all of this forward in our hearts.

Heartfelt gratitude to the staff on 5200 at the Moncton City Hospital and Dr. Feeney, Dr. Thebeau, and Dr. J. Cormier, who provided compassionate care with genuine kindness.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family invites friends of Arnold’s to a Celebration of Life reception. It will be on Saturday, Nov. 9th, 2024, at Whispering Willows 3299 Route 132, Tranquil Dr., Scoudouc, NB, from 3:00 to 4:30pm. It will be a chance to get together and share "Happy" memories in a relaxed, informal way, as per Arnold’s request.

If so desired, donations to the charity of your choice and words of comfort can be made at www.frenettefuneralhome.com.  Funeral arrangements are in the professional care of Frenette’s in Shediac (506-532-3297).
