It is with great sadness that the family announces the
passing of Emmett Savard, age 105, on November 22, 2023 at the
Veterans’ Health Centre in Moncton. Born on July 22, 1918 in
Arnprior, ON, he was the son of the late Abraham and Lena (Hogan)
Savard.
If you ever met Emmett, you weren’t long finding
out that he was from Arnprior, Ontario. He grew up there, in poverty,
but once he joined the Service (R.C.A.F.) in 1939, he would tell us he
was never hungry or without money ever again. In 1941, he was
transferred east to Moncton, and settled here after the war. He met
the love of his life, Germaine (Leger), here in Moncton; they were
married in 1943, and had five children.
After the war, Emmett worked at a number of jobs, but found
his calling as a Fire Fighter; first at Number 5 Supply Depot in
Moncton, then with the City of Moncton Fire Department, from where he
retired in 1983.
Emmett’s two main passions in life were first and
foremost, his family, and second was hockey. He lived hockey; playing
every chance he got, well into his 80’s.
He was predeceased by his wife Germaine in 1996. He was the
last surviving member of his immediate family of seven
siblings.
He is survived by his five children: David (Ronalda), Martin,
Yvette Saunders (Len), Dan and Bob; three granddaughters: Angela,
Jennifer and Debbie; and five great-grandchildren.
We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the
Veterans’ Health Centre for the loving care they provided to
Emmett over the past 6 ½ years.
The family will receive condolences at Frenette Funeral and
Cremation Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (506-858-1900) where the
funeral service will be celebrated on Saturday November 25 at 11 am.
Visiting hours are Friday from 6 to 9 pm and Saturday from 10 am until
time of funeral. Interment will be at Our Lady of Calvary cemetery in
Dieppe. In memory of Emmett, a contribution to the CHU Dumont
Foundation (Veterans’ Health Centre) would be
appreciated.
