Lionel Léger, 98, formerly of Montréal, passed away on Friday December 2, 2022 at the Cormier Pavilion of Faubourg du Mascaret in Moncton. Born in Scoudouc, he was the son of the late Dominique and Zélica (Gaudet) Léger.

Lionel studied at Collège Saint-Joseph in Memramcook. He moved to Montréal where he made a career as a customs officer at Dorval Airport. There he met the love of his life, Yolande Mathieu, and together they lived many memorable moments surrounded by friends with whom they spent evenings of music, dancing and long trips. He was a proud man, often with his tie around his neck and his Sunday shirt. He was interested in the news and had a vivid memory. A man of great religious faith, he always had a rosary handy.

He is survived by one sister, Edith Bourque (late Oscar) of Shediac; two brothers-in-law: Alderic McCaie and Joseph "Joe" Thibodeau, both of Moncton; one sister-in-law, Mariette Boivin (late Marcel Mathieu) of Laval; two goddaughters: Odette Léger (Richard) and Rachel Suffriti, as well as his nieces and nephews: Roberte, Doris, Roger, Bernice, Donald and Norman.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Yolande Mathieu (1999); five sisters: Rita (late Henri), Corinne, Andréa, Yvonne and Albertine; and two brothers: Camille (late Florence) and Hervé (late Rita); as well as his brother-in-law: Jean-Paul (late Marguerite).

The funeral mass will be celebrated at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Roman Catholic Church, 87 Murphy Avenue, Moncton on Monday December 5 at 11 am. The family will receive condolences at Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900) on Monday from 10 am until time of departure (10:45). Interment will be at Côte-des-Neiges cemetery in Montréal. In memory of Lionel, a contribution to the Alzheimer Society or to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.
