Sister Marie-Hélène Poirier, in
religion Lucius Marie, Fille de Jésus, of Riverview, passed
away on Friday July 22, 2022 at Monarch Hall, She was 93 years old,
and in the 70th year of her religious profession. Born in a family of
12 children in Chéticamp, NS, she was the daughter of the
late John and Suzanne (LeBlanc) Poirier.
After several years of experience in the world of work, at
the age of 21, she entered the novitiate in Trois-Rivières
at the same time as her sister Esther, and became a Fille de
Jésus in 1952.
Marie-Hélène devoted herself for many
years in various community services: cook in several of our
communities, in charge of the dining room at the Dalhousie hospital,
housekeeping in the Barachois community. In 1959-1960, she supervised
the boarders at Arichat. Then she worked with the elderly in the
Senior’s Home at Sydney for 10 years and in the service of
our sisters in the infirmary of the Provincial House for 11 years.
Afterwards she did volunteer work for three years first at Wedgeport
and later at Grande Anse. Then she assumed the service of receptionist
at the Provincial House for 12 years, with the different minor tasks
attached to this service.
Then she went to Rogersville where she visited the elderly. A
few years later, she came back to the Provincial House and rendered
many small services to our sisters in the infirmary until November
2009. She then moved to Riverview where she lived her retirement
years. While being blessed with fairly good health, she was unlucky
enough to have several falls which resulted in her being transferred
to Monarch Hall.
Marie-Hélène was a cheerful and
friendly person. She always had an answer and a word to make us laugh.
Gifted with a good spirit of humor, she knew how to focus on the
brighter side of events, to spread joy and to make life pleasant for
the people in her surroundings. She was also able to adapt quite
quickly to a new situation and she had the opportunity to do so in the
various services entrusted to her. She was generous and went on her
way without complaining. She was not keen on our disclosing her
multiple qualities, but appreciated whatever we would do for
her.
She went peacefully to the God who had called her and whom
she loved and served to the best of her possibilities. May He welcome
her now in His joy and peace.
Besides her Filles de Jésus Sisters, she is
survived by two sisters: Sr Virginie Poirier, fj, and Rita Chiasson;
one brother, Mederick Poirier; as well as her nieces and
nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by six sisters:
Marie-Louise Poirier, Adélaïde Poirier,
Joséphine Poirier, Tarzile Aucoin, Henriette-Anne Chiasson
and Esther Poirier; and two brothers: Hubert and Henri.
A sincere thank you to the staff of Monarch Hall for their
wonderful care provided to Sr.
Marie-Hélène
