Gérald Aucoin, 87, of Shediac passed away
peacefully on Saturday, March 12th, 2022, at
the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont UHC. Born in Rogersville, he was the son of
the late Joseph and Catherine (Johnson) Aucoin.
His studies started at the Pleasant Ridge grade school in
Rogersville, then continued at the St-Louis Convent and Dominique
Savio school, also in St-Louis. He did one year in
Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré. Gérald received a Bachelor
of Arts from L’Université St-Joseph and a
Bachelor of Education from the Université de
Moncton.
Gérald was principal for many years at the
Notre-Dame School. He also taught many years at the Polivalente
Clement-Cormier, one year in Shediac teaching St-Coeur de Marie school
in the morning and St-Joseph school in the afternoon, one year at the
Marguerite Michaud School and one year in Cocagne.
At the end of the 60’s, he marked the history
Matriculation exams in Fredericton. In 1971 – 1972, he
taught summer school to students who had failed courses and taught
night school to adults in Notre-Dame, Bouctouche and
Shediac.
In 1959 – 1961, he was secretary-treasurer for the
A.I.A. (Acadian Teachers Association) and for the N.B.T.A. (New
Brunswick Teachers Association) for the Kent Chapter. From 1962
– 1965, he was president for these two associations. He was
president of the grievance committee in Kent South, a member of the
Provincial History Committee and on the Kent Co. organisation of
contest in oratory arts.
Gérald was the founder and president of the
Athletic Club in Notre-Dame, president of the Sacré-Coeur
league in Notre-Dame, the Home and School Association of Notre-Dame
and Shediac and founder of Slow Pitch of Notre-Dame. He was a hockey
and baseball coach in Notre-Dame and boxing coach at the
Clement-Cormier high school.
He was vice-president of the Shediac Red Cross and the Golden
Age Club of Grand-Barachois, a member of the parish committee in
Shediac, a member of The Knights of Columbus in Grand-Barachois
(3rd and 4th degree)
where he was their financial secretary for nine year and then their
recording secretary. He was responsible for helping families in
need.
As a renowned storyteller, especially to his children, he was
often invited to schools to recite his many exciting, interesting, and
invented stories to young children.
He is survived by his spouse, Marie-Cécile,
née Roach; three daughters: Ginette Landry (Bob Black) of
Bellisle Bay, Jocelyne Aucoin (Gary Kelly) of Grand-Barachois, and
Lisette Auffrey (Louis) of Pré-d’en-Haut; one
son, Victor (Craig) of St-John’s NL; quatre sisters:
Jeannita Nazaire (late Abraham) of Atholville, Anne-Marie Bernard
(late Raoul) of Atholville, Thérèse McLaughlin
(Marc) of Longueuil, QC, and Jacqueline Aucoin of Shediac; three
brothers: Réginald (Florella) of Dieppe, Robert (Jeanne) of
Cap Lumière and Eugène (Annette) of Dieppe; four
grandchildren: Mathieu (Kelly), Stéphane, Luc (Jhade) and
Jacques (Mélanie), one great grandson, Alban and one
sister-in-law, Bertha.
Gérald was predeceased by three brothers: Louis,
Jean-Paul, and infant Lionel.
The family will receive condolences at the Frenette Funeral
and Cremation Centre, 396 Main Street, Shediac on Sunday March
20th from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral
mass will be celebrated at the St. Joseph R. C. Church, 415 Main
Street, Shediac on Monday, March 21st, at 11
am.

Vestiaire St-Joseph or to the St-Joseph parish, Shediac, would be
