Louis Laverne Fisher, 93, formerly of Moncton and Green Road, Elgin, passed away on Sunday April 18, 2021 at Forest Dale Home in Riverside-Albert. He was the son of the late Homer James and Barbara Vera (Schriftgiesser) Fisher. Louis was born in Quincy, Mass, USA and later moved back to his mother’s birth home in Harrisville, NB.
Louis led a wide and varied life. After leaving school in Harrisville, he went to work at the Record Foundry building stoves, and then at Marven’s Biscuit Factory. Disenchanted with that work, he joined the army in the Royal Canadian Engineers and after a brief indoctrination, was posted to Chilliwack, BC, and subsequently spent three years in Dusseldorf, Germany. Returning to Canada and opting out of the military, he returned to Moncton. He later met June (nee Allen), who he married, and their daughter, Nolalee, was born in 1963. Louis moved to Chilliwack, where he worked in security for a lumber company. In 1992, he moved back to Moncton to retire to his camp on the Green Road, near Elgin. He lived there until November 2019 when his health failed and let him to eventual residency at Forest Dale Nursing Home in Riverside-Albert.
Louis was credited with owning one of the first Harley Davidson motorcycles (retired military) in Moncton, along with one other acquaintance. Throughout Louis’ younger life, he wore a lot of hats. In his quest to fill an active mind and imagination, he decided to prospect for gold all over Albert County and Manganese along the Old Mill Humphrey Brook in Harrisville. Scouts were in his past now but he had been a Lone Scout, and after his return from Germany, he helped out with the Scout Troop in Humphrey. He assisted 650 Air Cadet Squadron as an instructor in outdoor survival for several years. During this time, he and Don McQuinn crash landed a small plane in Dawson Settlement, Albert Co. due to icing in the engine. Thankfully, Don was piloting and not Louis.
He is survived by his wife, June (Allen) Fisher of Saint John; his daughter, Nolalee Fisher of Moncton; one brother, Arlo Lutz Fisher of Riverview; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Ernest Fisher and step-father, Albert Maxwell.
As per Louis' wishes, there will be no visitation and no funeral service. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date at Elmwood Cemetery, Moncton. In memory of Louis, a contribution to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements are in the professional care of Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, Moncton (858-1900).
