It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Smith, 56, of Dieppe, after a brief illness on Wednesday October 21, 2020 at his residence. Born in Lakeburn and residing in his family home, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Irene (Atkinson) Smith.
He graduated from Bernice McNaughton High School in Moncton. As a youngster, he played minor hockey, and in later years played on many softball teams both in Moncton and Dieppe. He enjoyed the sport and the friends made through this sport. Don was an avid sports fan and his favorite teams were the New York Yankees and the Chicago Black Hawks. Don was employed with Loomis Courier for many years, and Altimax Courier of Dieppe until time of death.
Don will be sadly missed by four brothers: Lloyd of Sackville, Douglas (Gail) of Dieppe, Harold (Sue) of Riverview, and Howard (Kathy) of Dieppe; one sister-in-law, Cathy Smith of Ontario; two brothers-in-law: Max Shire and Bill Hamblin, both of Ontario; his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sisters: Betty Hamblin and Barbara Shire, both of Ontario; and two brothers: Larry of Ontario and infant Ernie.
There will be no visitation and no funeral service. A public graveside service will take place on Monday October 26 at 11 am at Elmwood Cemetery in Moncton. Due to the pandemic, face coverings are required and a maximum participation of 50 people with social distancing regulations are in effect. In memory of Donald, a contribution to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated. Funeral arrangements are in the professional care of Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, Moncton (858-1900).
