With heavy hearts, the family of Gérard Poirier, loving husband of 67 years to Flora (Hasselman), announce his passing on Monday March 12, 2018 at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont UHC. He was 93 years old. Born on July 29, 1924 in McNairn, Kent County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Annie (Allain) Poirier.

Known for his great heart, Gérard Poirier was a devoted husband, exceptional dad, caring grandpa and great-grandfather and faithful friend. In addition to his devoted wife Flora (Hasselman), Gérard is survived by his children: Roméo (Patricia) of Ottawa, Denise (Bob), Joanne (Eugène LeBlanc) both of Moncton, and Ginette (Paul Gauvin) of Irishtown; nine grandchildren: Sébastien, Michel, Jean-Simon, Marie-Michelle, Marc-André, Daniel, Nicolas, Mario and Denis; five great-grandchildren; Maxime-Xavier, Xavier, Liliane, Julie and Tristan; as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by two sisters: Nélida (late Hervé Gagnon), Clarisse (late Huntley McLaughlin); three brothers: Émile (late Léola), Irénée (late Imelda) and Aldrice (Dorice); as well as an adopted son, Harvey Cormier.

After 35 years of service at DND, Department of National Defense (#5, 5D), Gérard tried golf but his big love was fly-fishing, which he continued into his later years. He did manage to catch the trout of his dreams on the Miramichi River. He was an honored member of the Chevalier de Colomb #11985 at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix parish in Humphrey.

Gerard's family would like to extend special thanks to the many doctors and the nurses and staff of the palliative wing at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont hospital.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900) on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm only. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix Church, 87 Murphy Avenue, Moncton, on Saturday March 17 at 10:30 am. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary cemetery, Dieppe. At Gérard's request, instead of flowers, a mass offering would be appreciated. Online condolences and sharing of memories may be expressed through www.frenettefuneralhome.com.
