Marie Delaney

1920-2010

Marie Delaney
Marie A. Delaney, 90, wife of the late Dr. Austin Delaney, of Moncton, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2010 at The Moncton Hospital following a brief illness. Born on April 21, 1920 in Cap-Pelé, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Émerise (Landry) LeBlanc.

She is survived by her four children: Paul of Moncton, Roger (Sheila) of Thunder Bay, ON, Diane Delaney of Boston, MA, and Susan Carey (Norm Strickland) of Moncton; four grandchildren: Christopher, Michelle, Melissa and Michael; two great-grandchildren: Brandon and Kaitlyn; also many nieces and nephews. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers: Yvon and Ferdinand; five sisters: Edith Landry, Odelia Goguen, Mae Bourque, Sylvie LeBlanc and Rita Jacob.

In many ways her life was blessed. She had a happy childhood, a happy marriage and happiness in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After attending local school and then the Convent of Notre-Dame du Sacré-Coeur near Memramcook (1936-40), which she loved and where she got top marks, she trained as a nurse at Hôpital St-Luc in Montréal (1940-3), where she met her future husband. After his semi-retirement, she enjoyed 17 winters in Florida. Even to her last days, she retained her good looks and graciousness. Her warmth and smile went out to everyone she met. She loved to laugh. At the same time, she had a gentle nature and genuine goodness of heart. She was entirely without malice and was baffled to discover it in others. She was even a favourite of her mother-in-law’s. Deeply religious, she lived a devout and prayerful life, and was a life-time member of the Catholic Women’s League. Her faith gave her a gentle strength that could surprise those who did not know her well. Yet, despite her high standards, she was never judgmental to others. She was a shrewd judge of character and could have an astounding intuitive grasp of situations. Though she was an avid bridge player, loved to travel and participated in many other activities, like Meals on Wheels, she gave most of her energy to those she loved, not only to her immediate family, but also to her sisters and brothers, to many of her nephews and nieces, godchildren and friends. She always spoke most lovingly of her own mother; thus she too will be remembered. To a great many who knew her, she was a very special person.

The family will receive condolences at Frenette Funeral Home, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900) on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., and Thursday, from 10 a.m. until time of departure (10:45). The funeral mass will be celebrated at Notre-Dame-d’Acadie R.C. Church (Université de Moncton) on Thursday, August 19, at 11 a.m. Interment will be beside her beloved husband in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe. In memory of Marie, donations to the Palliative Care Unit of The Moncton Hospital would be appreciated.
